Most common injuries (per WorkSafeBC worker claims 2015-2019)

Injuries due to falling are common.  Decks covered in fish slime and open fish holds are often attributed to being the cause of a serious fall leading to fractured bones and serious strains resulting in immobility.

  • Example: Working on a docked vessel, the worker didn’t see an open manhole and fell into it.

  • Example: Worker was lifting a 50lb box of fish when he slipped on some poly wrap discarded on the deck, injuring his back.

  • Solution: Regularly hose down decks and other areas to remove fish slime.  Be aware of open tanks and be sure to cover tanks after delivering or unloading fish.  Maintain a clean workspace free of tripping or slipping hazards as much is reasonably possible.
