TSB Fishing Vessel Fire Report Released

30 minutes is all it took from the moment a fire was discovered on the crab vessel Frederike. C-2 to the time at which the entire crew was forced to abandon ship – fortunately, with no loss of life.

In its recently released Marine Investigation Report into the Fire and Sinking of the FV Frederike. C-2 (April 28, 2015) the Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) has detailed not only the events leading up to the incident but also the findings as to causes and contributing factors involved in the loss of this vessel.

Access the full report here: http://www.tsb.gc.ca/eng/rapports-reports/marine/2015/m15c0045/m15c0045.asp

In the report you will learn how delay and a lack of a coordinated response by the vessel crew contributed to the loss of the vessel.  Additionally, the TSB effectively describes how a lack of formal crew safety familiarization, training and ongoing drills practice increased the risks.

For these reasons, the TSB highlights Fish Safe and our Safest Catch program as being an effective means for helping fishermen take ownership of safety on board their vessels in a voluntary and non-punitive fashion.

In BC, the Safest Catch is provided free of charge to all commercial fishermen.  Click here to learn more!
