Small Vessel Inspection Update – Transport Canada campaign 2021
Transport Canada is about to begin its fourth national Concentrated Inspection Campaign (CIC), which will target small fishing vessels.
This CIC will focus on items such as lifesaving and firefighting equipment, ensuring proper procedures are in place for crew safety as well as ensuring the existence of adequate vessel stability. (The CIC will not result in any inspection fees.)
In order to bolster oversight of the Canadian fleet, Transport Canada conducts CICs on domestic vessels on average every two years. These CICs are usually done outside of the normal certification cycle, and are conducted to address specific areas where inspectors have found high levels of deficiencies, or where new convention and/or regulatory requirements have recently entered into force.
In general, CICs work to accomplish the following:
To encourage safety by promoting compliance among vessel owners;
to give Inspectors insight into the level of compliance of vessels that may not be found during periodic/compliance inspections; and
to give Inspectors more in-depth knowledge of certain areas of vessels.
Transport Canada Inspectors will be reaching out to the owners of the vessels that have been selected for the CIC to arrange a suitable time to visit the vessel. It is anticipated that the inspections should not take any longer than an hour or two.
